Fevered Sleep is looking for artists working in any discipline to join a pool of Associate Artists for The Institute of Everything, a year-long research project exploring creativity and critical thinking in primary schools.  The project is a collaboration with Clifton Green Primary School in York and will run from September 2018 – July 2019.

Through the project we aim to introduce the whole school community (children, teachers, governors and families) to the idea that artists are people who are engaged in looking at the world critically, and who create new ways of thinking and being.  We’re trying to move away from the idea that artists simply make things.

The Institute of Everything is being led and curated by Fevered Sleep’s artistic directors, David Harradine and Sam Butler.

The role of the Associate Artists is to introduce fresh ways of thinking, unexpected creative approaches, and all sorts of artistic practices to the school.  We’re looking for professional artists from a range of disciplines who:

  • See their practice as a kind of research or investigation, with a strong focus on critical thinking and creative inquiry.
  • Are interested in championing creativity in schools, and challenging current approaches to what the arts in schools looks like.
  • Enjoy opening up their practice to others, through sharings, discussions, demonstrations, experiments and workshops (or in other ways that we haven’t thought of yet).

Associate Artists do not need any prior experience of working in school settings.

Fevered Sleep is committed to promoting equality and diversity. We welcome expressions of interest from people who are under-represented in the arts sector due to their socio-economic status or ethnic background, and disabled people.  We’re also particularly keen to hear from those based in Yorkshire and the North East (although this is not essential).

We’ll invite a group of shortlisted artists to join us for an exchange day in York or Leeds on 26th or 27th July, for which participating artists will be paid a fee of £75 plus travel expenses.  This day will allow us to discover more about you and your practice, and provides an opportunity for an interesting group of artists to come together and learn about each other and share ideas.  Following this exchange day, we’ll invite a number of people to become Associates.

We’ll work with Associate Artists in an ad hoc way over the course of the year.  We might invite an Associate to visit the school just once; or we may plan for a series of visits or intensive project.  All Associate Artists will be paid a daily rate of £200.
