I am so proud of where I come from and moving away has never entered my mind; I would do anything to help anyone in trouble.

My name is Bernadette Taylor, and I am firmly ensconced in Stepney, East London, being the third generation of the family to marry at the same church. I am married with two children, one a practising solicitor and the other an executive chef. My husband is from Wapping, so neither of us have strayed far from our roots. I am so proud of where I come from and moving away has never entered my mind; I would do anything to help anyone in trouble.

I am a self-taught dressmaker which was borne of not being able to afford the clothes I wanted my daughter to wear. I began designing and making her clothes over fifty years ago and have not stopped sewing since, and at the age of 75 have finally worked and gained a BA university degree in fashion design. Since gaining the degree I have set up sewing classes and pass my knowledge on to others.

During one of the lockdowns in 2021 whilst finishing the degree, a small newspaper called Hope Is... was posted through the letterbox. As a welcome distraction from the endless essays I settled down with a cup of tea to read it.

The newspaper was from Fevered Sleep, and on reading I was hooked by the work and meaning of a group of dedicated people.

Within the paper was a vacancy for a trustee, for which I applied and was successful, and thus far I have met some lovely people and hope to be of some use to Fevered Sleep.
