It was while sitting in a box at the Royal Albert Hall, a man lying at my feet with his hand up a dog’s bottom that I realised the pure joy and slight absurdity of my predicament.
To explain further, I was at the CBeebies Prom sharing a small space with an animated puppet called Dodge and the puppeteer operating it (hence the dog’s bottom).
I have spent just over 25 years working with giant furry creatures, animated ‘talent’ and the occasional vat of gunge in the wonderful world of children’s TV. As Head of In-House Development for CBeebies I lead a talented team in creating the blockbuster shows of the future… the shows that people, in twenty years’ time, will be discussing over a pint in the pub. I’ve worked with the BBC, ITV, Channel 5, GMTV and Disney, plus various independent production companies on series like Teletubbies, Art Attack and Doctor Who.
And you can’t work with children without including animals; I’ve been ‘carer’ to seven cats over the last two decades, every one of them loved and missed.
I’m based part-time in London and Manchester: when in Manchester I’m on the board of youth dance company, Company Chameleon.
